âWeâre in quite the pickle, arenât we?â
âThat we are.â
Asuna and I had retreated behind a big rock in the middle of a barren wasteland located far from the main road. Barely anything else was in sight, except for just one rocky mountain in the distance.
âThat caterpillar sure is a tough one.â
âVery tough,â I agreed. âI didnât think none of my spells would work.â
âYeah, but Iâm more surprised at how many spells you could use in the first place, Liam.â
âHuh? Didnât I already tell you that I could use a hundred?â
âYou did, but anybody would take it as a joke, you know?â
I didnât say it like it was, though...
That aside, we really were in a bit of a tight spot here. This huge monster caterpillar was way tougher than we expected. Nothing Iâd thrown at it made a dent, no matter if it was Fireball or Ice Needle or whatever else. I even had some spirits like Salamanders and Sylphs attack it, but that, too, was a no-go. On top of all that, Asunaâs blades just got knocked right back, instead ending up with a few nicks as if sheâd just slammed them against a huge lump of metal. None of our attacks were working, so we retreated before we could sustain any damage.
âThis is my first time fighting against a monster, and boy, can I see why the guild gives these things special treatment,â Asuna mused wryly.
âSame here.â
After a brief pause, I heard her speak again. âSay, Liam.â
âHm?â I turned to meet her gaze; she had the look of someone who just had a brilliant idea.
âYou cast a spell called Shell on me yesterday, right?â
âYeah... What about it?â
âWell, if that magic raises defense, then there should also be magic that raises offense, right? Maybe youâve got that up your sleeve too?â
âI wouldnât recommend it.â
She pouted at the instant rejection. âWhy not?â
I held my palm up toward her. âTry punching my hand lightly.â
âLike this?â she asked, her fist making a clean and sharp sound.
âNow as hard as you can.â
âOkay.â
SNAP! Her fist made a more crisp sound than before.
âYour hand hurt more when you punched harder, right?â
âIt sure did.â
âI can raise your attack power, but it places a proportionate burden on your body too. You ever heard about cases where people break an arm from swinging a rod against something?â
âAhhh... I get it. Definitely wouldnât want that.â
It was like a pitfall. If you raised your attack power, your body wouldnât be able to adapt to and bear with the increase in strength. Of course, desperate situations could call for gaining as much power as possible in the moment, but ours was not one such situation.
âAwww, and here I was getting all giddy that the guild requested us too. What a bummer. Whereâs a random meteorite when you need one? Is it that hard to crash perfectly into that caterpillar for us?â
Asuna started whining, already poised to give up. Of course, since sheâd seen for herself how none of our attacks got through to the caterpillar, I was more inclined to commend her for her speedy situational awareness instead.
